Content Inside:
Sun damage to the skin is not caused by the sunlight that we see, but by the invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation, called ultraviolet light, that emanates from the sun. This ultraviolet light is divided into three major bands, known as UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. UVB, known as the "burning rays," are the ones that cause sunburn and some skin cancers. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and can cause more serious and long-term damage to the skin. The three types of ultraviolet rays are shown below.
How Much UV Radiation Reaches Me?
The amount of UV radiation you are exposed to varies according to the time of day, the season, the weather, and the geographical location you are in. The more intense the sun, the greater your exposure to UV radiation. Some things you should know:
* You can get a sunburn even on a cloudy day, since up to 80% of UV radiation can penetrate through clouds.
* Surfaces such as white sand and snow can re?ect UV radiation. The re?ection of UV rays from these surfaces intensi?es the exposure you are already getting by simply being outdoors.
* It is easier to burn at higher altitudes, because there is less atmosphere to block UV rays.
