The sun's rays are strongest between 10am and 3pm. During this time of the day, the sun is more directly overhead. This means the sun's rays have a shorter distance to travel through the atmosphere, which filters them before they reach the earth's surface. This remains true on cloudy days, as UVR (ultraviolet radiation) can penetrate and cause skin damage. UVR levels are slightly lower in winter than they are in summer, however the winter sun can still cause skin damage and skin cancer.
Why is shade important when planning outdoor activities
When choosing a location (park, swimming pool, or beach) for your outdoor activity, find out what natural or built shade will be available. It may be necessary to pack your own sun shelter, such as an umbrella or beach cabana. If your child is in a stroller or pram outdoors, it is important to provide suitable cover. The level of sun protection provided by shade structures depends on their design and material used. UVR bounces off reflective surfaces, even in the shade. So keep your baby protected from the sun at all times.
