About this leaflet This leaflet is designed to give you basic advice on managing your child if they have Eczema. If you have any concerns regarding your child, you should always seek medical advice. What is eczema? Atopic eczema is a common childhood skin condition. Children with eczema have a very sensitive skin. The first symptoms you may notice are patches of dry, red inflamed skin, which causes intense itching. The affected areas can become thickened from constant scratching and rubbing. Common areas to be affected are the neck, wrists, hands, feet and skin creases of the elbows and behind the knees. The skin is not usually sore all the time, this comes and goes. When eczema worsens after a good period, this is called an exacerbation of eczema. Many children will grow out of it as they get older, but some will continue to have eczema in adulthood. If you suspect that your child may have eczema, it is important to see your GP so that a correct diagnosis can be made and a suitable treatment prescribed. What causes atopic eczema? Eczema can be an inherited condition. There are often other family members with eczema or the associated conditions of asthma or hay fever. However, there are other factors which may trigger or cause an exacerbation of your childs eczema. Environmental Factors House dust mite Woollen or synthetic clothes Some toiletries or detergents Grass pollen Temperature changes It is important that your childs bedroom is not too hot as being hot can make eczema worse. Similarly in hot weather, although some sunshine may help to improve the eczema, your child must be kept cool.
