Recent advances in the understanding of the genes, which control the thickness of our skin, are leading to an understanding of how sensitive skin, contact dermatitis and atopic eczema develop. Sensitive skin is manifest as experiencing one or more of burning, stinging and itching, following the application of topical products such as soap, and some bubble baths and cosmetics. The skin may also become red and dry after repeated application of such products. Skin sensitivity can occur in the context of atopic eczema as a child. We now understand, from new research, that there are genes which make our skin more vulnerable to be damaged and react to things in our personal environment, such as soap. New research has focused on children with mild/moderate atopic eczema and found changes in the genes that regulate the thickness of their skin barrier. The skin barrier is located in the top of the skin and is analogous to a brick wall. There is a change in a gene in children with atopic eczema which causes their skin barrier (brick wall) to weaken. The weakened brick wall is more vulnerable to the adverse effects of things in our personal environment, such as soap and surfactants. If we lived in a bubble and were protected from our personal environment, the weakened skin barrier ...
