Eczema has increased twoto threefold in the past 30 years (Williams 1992), and now affects about 10 per cent of the UK population (Sladden et al 1991). Nurses play a vital role in the management and treatment of eczema. More and more nurses are able to prescribe treatment and administer it, and it is often the nurse who educates the client about his or her condition. It is important, therefore, that nurses are competent when treating eczema, and are able to gain access to appropriate and accurate information for themselves and for clients. Eczema can be a complex condition to manage, with time-consuming and messy management routines, and the frustration of trying numerous different treatments and sometimes watching them fail. Managing eczema well and coping with the effects that it can have on everyday life needs dedication and determination, not only for the person with eczema, and his or her carers, but also for the health professionals involved in his or her care. The importance of information With the growth in the use of complementary therapies, accurate information is a vital tool. Although complementary medicines work well for some people with eczema, they can also be ineffective and, in some cases, dangerous. Helping clients to understand their treatment as well as helping them to try alternatives, as safely and effectively as possible is, therefore, very important. The safety of medicines and treatments which lie outside the NHS is of concern to many and the Associate Parliamentary Group on Skin has just published a report on fraudulent practice in the treatment of skin diseases (All Party Parliamentary Group 1999).
