Patient and Family Education Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis) What is eczema? Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a skin condition. It begins in infancy or childhood and the cause is often unknown. In some children, it may be caused by food allergies or allergies to things around them. Eczema can be hereditary. It may also be related to hay fever or asthma. What are the possible symptoms? Your child may have one or more of the following symptoms: Redness Itching, which may be very intense at times Swelling Scaling of the skin Rough, dry skin How do I treat eczema? Your childs doctor will talk with you about specific care for your child. Some general guidelines to follow include: Stay away from foods or things in the environment that seem to make the rash worse. Stay away from very hot or cold temperatures, especially during summer and winter. Use soft cotton clothing. Avoid wool or acrylic blankets or sleepers. Cover your childs legs when your infant crawls on wool carpeting. When bathing, use less soap and water than usual; gently pat skin dry and apply cream right away. Use the type of soap, sunscreen and detergent advised by your childs doctor. Use a steroid cream if prescribed by your childs doctor. Keep your childs fingernails clipped and covered with cotton socks if needed. Give your child Benadryl ® or another antihistamine by mouth to control severe itching (especially at night), if prescribed by his doctor. If advised by your childs doctor, use a skin care moisturizing lotion that does not contain alcohol or irritate your childs skin. When should I call the doctor? In case of an urgent concern or emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room right away. This is general information and is not specific medical advice for your child.
