How to keep your childs skin moist Dermatitis (derm-uh-tie-tiss) means inflammation of the skin. To help the skin, water is used to keep the skin moist, and then cream or ointment is applied to keep the water in the skin. Bathing Wet the skin all over your childs body. This can be done daily in the bathtub or shower. Keep the skin wet for no more than 10 minutes. Use no soap, or very little soap, at the end of the bath or shower. Use white Dove bar or Cetaphil cleanser. Avoid soaps such as Ivory, Irish Spring or Zest.Do not add anything to the bath water, such as bubble bath or bath oils. Rinse off the soap quickly so that it does not remove moisture or oil from the skin. After bathing 1. While the skin is still wet, quickly pat the skin dry with a towel, and then apply triamcinolone 0.1% or Elocon (mometasone) steroid ointment to the rash on the arms, legs and trunk. 2. Apply desonide or Aclovate (alcometasone) steroid ointment to the rash on the face, neck, groin and underarms. 3. After applying the steroid ointment, quickly apply unscented Vaseline petroleum jelly, Aquaphor, Eucerin cream or Cetaphil cream to the areas of normal skin everywhere on the body. 4. Reapply moisturizer during the day to any areas of skin that appear to be dry. Long-term care Over time, the steroid ointment can be gradually decreased and then stopped altogether. If you do not notice improvement, call our office for further instructions. Continue to apply moisturizer after every bath or shower and several times during the day. Steroid ointments should not be used for more than two to three weeks at a time, but they can be used periodically when a rash is present.
