Patient Information. If you have acne, youre not alone. Acne is the most common skin problem in the United States. Nearly 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 24 will develop acne. In most people, the condition goes away around age 30, but some people continue to have acne even into their 40s and 50s. Acne can occur on the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders. It can be treated with over-the-counter or prescription medications. If left untreated, acne can create scars. About Your Skin Why does your skin break out in pimples? Spread over most of the body are follicles that contain fine hair. Each follicle also contains a gland that makes an oily substance called sebum. Sebum, which moistens and protects the skin, empties onto the skin surface through the follicle. Sometimes the hair, sebum and skin cells produce a plug, preventing sebum from getting to the skin surface. Bacteria that normally live on the skin grow in the plugged follicles, causing inflammation. The walls of the follicle can break down, spilling sebum, skin cells and bacteria onto the skin. This clogs pores, which can lead to acne. Causes of Acne Acne has several potential causes. First, certain hormones increase in girls and boys during puberty, causing the glands in the follicles to enlarge and make more sebum. More sebum often leads to more acne. Pregnancy and certain birth control pills also can cause hormonal changes that lead to acne. (And other birth control pills can actually help reduce acne.) Heredity is another factor. If your parents had acne, you are more likely to develop acne, too. Over-the-Counter Treatment People with mild acne can use over-the-counter topical medicines. These medications, such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, may cause side effects such as skin irritation, redness or burning.
