Content Inside:
Kwashiorkor means malnutrition with oedema. It usually occurs fairly rapidly precipitated by some sort of crisis or problem in a previously malnourished child. The deficiency is especially protein. Kwashiorkor is commonest in the second year of life, and often occurs following the birth of another baby. These babies often look plump due to oedema but the upper arms reveal their wasting. They are usually miserable and do not want to eat.
When a severely malnourished baby develops oedema then it is said to have Marasmic Kwashiorkor.
These severely malnourished babies suffer from protein- energy malnutrition. However vitamins and minerals are also deficient. They frequently have infections and/or worms as well. The treatment is food and often also treatment of infections. The child should be fed six times daily with a well balanced diet- energy, protein, minerals, and vitamins. Many children will recover simply by feeding. Most however will require admission. Then we give first "Nutrition Resuscitation", then "Rehabilitation Diet".
