Pneumonia is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in this population. It also is the leading reason for transfer to acute-care facilities. 4-6 At a median incidence rate of 1 to 1.2 per 1,000 patient-days, 4,7 residents of LTC facilities develop pneumonia approximately 10 times more frequently than older adults in the community. 3 Their hospitalization rate is reported to be nearly 30 times higher.
