What is Asthma?
Asthma is a reversible condition of the bronchial tubes or airways. Certain substances can cause them to become narrow and close down or go into spasm. There is also inflammation and swelling of the lining of the tubes that causes more mucus to be produced, further blocking the airways. Air can get into your lungs, but because of the blockages, there is a problem getting air out completely. This is called airway obstruction. The blockage and mucus causes the symptoms of coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Asthma attacks may last from a few minutes to several hours. How often the attacks occur varies from person to person.
