This month, Pierre Vauthy, MD, a board-certified pediatric pulmonologist, discusses how to help your child from getting asthma flare-ups during cold weather. Be sure to consult your own family physician or pediatrician if you have specific questions or concerns.

Q: Can cold weather trigger asthma?
A: Yes. During cooler months, cold, dry air is a common trigger that may cause severe symptoms very quickly. Kids with exercise-induced asthma who are active in winter sports are also particularly susceptible. Additionally, wet weather promotes the growth of mold spores, which can trigger allergy-related asthma.

Q: What can I do if my childs asthma is linked to weather?
A: To help combat a flare-up during the next few months: be sure your child wears a scarf over his mouth and nose during very cold weather. dry clothes in the dryer instead of hanging them up to dry, which allows pollen and mold to collect on them. help your child to avoid triggers such as raking leaves. keep all windows shut to help prevent outdoor pollens and ...
