This is a review on autoimmune hepatitis in children (AIH). It gives the definition of autoimmune hepatitis, diagnostic criteria and classification, considering the issues of etiology, pathogenesis and clinical features, and representing the present-day therapeutic regimens for drug treatment of autoimmune hepatitis. Int Pediatr. 2003;18(1):23-29. Key words: children, autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) Introduction In the literature, autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is described under various terms. The descriptions are in accordance with the determined clinical and laboratory scope of the disease and the knowledge available for research during the time pertaining to the pathogenesis process. In 1950, chronic hepatitis (CH) was diagnosed for the first time in young women by Waldenstrom. 1 Later, the chronic liver disease with manifestations of systemic signs, hypergglobulinaemia and LE-cell activity was described as lupoid hepatitis, 2 progressive hyperg-globulinaemic hepatitis, 3 and chronic active hepatitis. 4 The term autoimmune hepatitis was suggested by Mackay in 1965. 5 Following the identification of the hepatitis C virus in 1989, there was considerable uncertainty about the criteria for diagnosis of autoimmune chronic hepatitis.
