Abstract : A .* year old male suffering from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome was admitted to our hospital with fever and right hypochondric pain. Ultrasonography and a computed tomography examination demonstrated an abscess in the right lobe of the liver. An enzyme linked immunosorbant assay ELISA showed an increase in the serum amebic antibody level. He was diagnosed to have an amebic liver abscess, despite a negative cultivation in the drained specimen obtained from the hepatic abscess. The liver abscess decreased remarkably in size after both the administration of metronidazol and percutaneous transhepatic abscess drainage.
