Acute renal failure (ARF), also known as acute kidney injury, means decreased kidney function (reduced glomerular filtration rate) over a relatively short period of time. This can occur in the setting of previously normal kidney function or as an acute-on-chronic phenomenon. Manifestations of ARF may include: Rising BUN and serum creatinine Oliguria Volume overload Hypertension Electrolyte abnormalities Patients may present with signs and symptoms of renal failure, or with hematuria, or with flank/abdominal pain, or with no symptoms at all.
