With world-wide figures suggesting 50 per cent of patients who develop acute kidney failure dont recover, the University of Otagos Kidney in Health & Disease Research Group is keen to test new means of early detection through their HRC-funded research. Professor Zoltan Endre, who heads the Universitys Christchurch Kidney Research Group says the death rate for ICU patients with renal failure is up to 80 per cent, and between 40 and 50 per cent outside ICU. This is a high mortality, high frequency condition with a course which hasnt been able to be modified for over 50 years.
