Acute kidney failure is caused by a sudden loss of the kidneys ability to remove toxins, excess chemicals, and water. Acute kidney failure usually reverses within several weeks to months. There are many different causes for acute kidney failure. These include, extremely low blood pressure, decreased oxygen to the kidney, and obstruction, trauma or infections to the kidney. Symptoms Symptoms vary from patient to patient. Common symptoms include: Decreased urine output Swelling Nausea and vomiting Change in mood/mental status. Some laboratory values will be increased because the kidney cannot correctly and efficiently remove toxins and chemicals.
