Aortic regurgitation can have many causes, including diseases that affect connective tissue, which is the substance ofthe aortic valve and the ascending aorta (Table 1). In most of these diseases, aortic regurgitation progresses gradually, allowing time for the left ventricle to accommodate the large diastolic volume by increasing its end-diastolic size and developing eccentric hypertrophy. A few diseases can cause sudden severe aortic regurgitation.
