Fried, toasted, cooked or baked. People often use these colorful adjectives when describing their day in the sun. But no matter how you say it, when you head out in to the sun unprotected, you are damaging your skin. That's why the American Cancer Society says, "Fry now pay later" in its campaign to educate the public about increasing the risk of skin cancer. The statistics speak for themselves. About 800,000 cases occur in this country alone each year. In fact, it is estimated that a staggering one in every five people will be stricken by skin cancer in their lifetime.

According to medical experts, a tan is the first sign that skin has been damaged. A sunburn is even worse â often altering the way a person's skin cells reproduce and increasing their risk for developing skin cancer. But that's not the only way the sun wreaks havoc. Overexposure to radiation from the sun also weakens blood vessels, produces visibly broken red lines, and triggers blackheads, brown spots (liver spots) and blotchy skin. Additionally, it breaks down the skin's fibrous proteins, destroys elasticity and causes premature aging â i.e. wrinkles.

Today, skin cancer is commonly found in young people, from mid-teens and onward. Children or teenagers who suffer severe, blistering sunburns are more likely to develop melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, later in life. In fact, one severe sunburn during early childhood can double a child's chance of developing skin cancer later in life.

We are all at risk, since damage to the skin is cumulative. You don't have to be a sun worshiper to be at risk for skin cancer. Gardening, walking or watching the children outdoors can all add up. For people with fair skin and for those who work or spend a great deal of time outdoors, they too are at an increased risk. ...
