Prostate Cancer Fact Sheet Prostate Cancer Fact Sheet USA.DOC.05.08.30 2 3 Family history: Recent genetic studies suggest that strong familial predisposition may contribute to 5% to 10% of prostate cancer cases. However, a family history of a brother or father with prostate cancer increases the risk of prostate cancer by two-fold to three-fold, and the risk is inversely related to the age of the affected relative. Other: An increasing number of studies are showing that a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids and nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables can lower the risk of developing prostate cancer. Common Signs and Symptoms Early prostate cancer often does not cause symptoms, but prostate cancer can cause many of the same symptoms that are often seen in men with other prostaterelated problems, including: A need to urinate frequently, especially at night Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine Weak or interrupted flow of urine Painful or burning urination Difficulty in having an erection Painful ejaculation Blood in urine or semen Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs The Multidisciplinary Medical Team Urologists are often the first to diagnose prostate cancer, as they specialize in diseases of the genitourinary tract.
