Did you know that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Jamaican men and the leading cause of cancer related death among men in Jamaica? Prostate cancer is nearly 100% survivable if detected early. But often there are no early warning signs or symptoms. The only way to detect the disease in its early stages is through a simple blood test (PSA) and a digital rectal exam (DRE). The Jamaica Cancer Society encourages all Jamaican men over the age of 40 years to undergo Prostate Cancer Screening. Screening consists of a digital rectal examination (DRE) and a blood test for a prostate specific antigen (PSA). PROCEDURE To perform the DRE your doctor will insert a gloved finger into the rectum and gently press against the prostate gland. Blood will be drawn by a healthcare professional for analysis at a laboratory for a prostate specific antigen (PSA). If your DRE and/or PSA are abnormal you will be referred for further testing. If you do not have a personal physician, we can refer you to a urologist. GET CHECKED Men are often reluctant to be screened for the disease. The best prevention against prostate cancer is early detection! Because symptoms of prostate cancer may not occur until the disease is advanced, screening is the first step.
