Over sixty years ago, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Charles Huggins and Clarence Hodges for their discovery that depriving the prostate gland of androgenstestosterone and other male sex hormonesleads to the death of both normal and cancerous prostate cells. Since that time, androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) has become a mainstay of treatment for prostate cancer. Prostate cancer may be conceptually divided into clinically localized cases, which are confined to the prostate and may be treated effectively with surgery, radiation, or other local treatments; and advanced disease, in which the cancer has spread beyond the prostate to lymph nodes, bones, or other sites.
