Lip and oral cavity cancer occurs on the lips, the front two-thirds of the tongue, the gums, the lining inside the cheeks and lips, the floor of the mouth under the tongue, the palate and the small area behind the wisdom teeth. Lip and oral cavity cancers can usually be diagnosed by a physical examination of the lips and inside the mouth using a gloved hand and mirror. A diagnosis of lip or oral cancer is confirmed by a biopsy in which doctors remove a small amount of tissue so they can examine it under a microscope to look for cancer cells. Tissue for the biopsy is taken using a procedure called exfoliative cytology, in which a physician collects cells from the lips, tongue or oral cavity using a cotton swab, a brush or a wooden stick. In some cases, a complete examination may include imaging techniques to check other parts of the body.
