You have been advised to have surgery for your cancer of the liver. Your doctors and nurses will explain this to you. This leaflet explains in general about the operation and the recovery process. Everyone is an individual however and so your team will add the details of your particular operation and the reasons for it. Please ask any questions you may have. You may find it useful to write them down at the end of this leaflet. Surgery is the main treatment for primary liver cancer, although it is not possible to treat everyone using this. Your doctor will explain the reasons for the treatment you are receiving.
If only one part of the liver is affected by the cancer and the rest of the liver is in good condition it may be possible to do an operation to remove the affected part. This is called a liver resection. If the operation removes a whole lobe of the liver it is called a lobectomy. The liver has an amazing capacity to repair itself. Even if up to 3/4 of the liver is removed, it will start to grow again quickly.
After your operation you will be in intensive care until you have fully recovered from the anaesthetic. The doctors will need to keep a very close check on your blood pressure and you may have a tube (called a CVP line) going into a vein in your neck so that they can get ...
