Kidney cancer is an abnormal, uncontrolled growth of cells in the
kidney. The most common type is renal cell cancer, which accounts
for about 85 percent of all kidney tumors.
Kidneys do many things, including:
* Filter blood
* Produce urine to get rid of the
body's waste
* Make chemicals that help control
blood pressure
* Produce substances involved in
formation of red blood cells
Staging is the process of finding out how far the cancer has spread
(or metastasized). It is very important because, to a large extent, your
treatment and the outlook for your recovery depend on the stage of your
cancer. In general, the lower the number, the less the cancer has spread.
In most cases, the earlier cancer is caught, the better the outlook. This is
because when the cancer is in its early phases, it is less likely to have
spread to other parts of the body.
It's hard to use statistics to try to figure out your chances of recovery
because no two people are alike, and treatments and responses vary greatly.
Your doctor is in the best position to talk with you about your outlook.
Surgery (discussed later in the brochure) is the primary treatment for
kidney cancer. However, based on the cancer stage, your general
health and age, your doctor will develop a treatment plan that best fits
your needs using one or a combination of methods.
