What to Expect from Oral Head and Neck Cancer Treatment Managing Side Effects, and Reconstructive Surgery and Rehabilitation Many of the treatment side effects for oral, head and neck cancer (OHNC) are similar to the side effects of treatments for other cancers. However, because of the nature of the physical structures that can be affected by OHNC facial features, eating, tasting and speaking and breathing organs the side effects and after effects of treatment can adversely impact functioning, self-image and quality of life. Side effects may not cause a lasting problem for tumors that can be removed without damaging crucial organs. But if, for example, portions of the larynx, tongue, palate or jaw are removed, speaking, eating, breathing and other functions may be affected. In some cases, reconstructive surgery may be needed to rebuild bone or tissue; rehabilitation or prosthetic devices may be required to regain lost function; and psychological help may be needed to deal with quality-of-life and self-image issues. Side Effects and After Effects of Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Treatment Side effects, like treatment programs, will vary from person to person depending on the site of the cancer and individual reactions.
