The esophagus is a long, muscular tube that starts in the back of your mouth. CANCER OF THE ESOPHAGUS Background The esophagus is a long, muscular tube that starts in the back of your mouth. Being about twelve inches in length, it runs along side of the trachea, passes through the diaphragm and terminates at the superior portion of the stomach. It is what the body uses to move nutrition from the mouth to the stomach. The esophagus is made up of different layers that perform different functions. The most superficial is the mucosa. Other layers are the submucosa, muscularis propia and adventitia. Cancer of the esophagus, also called esophageal cancer, is a tumor or an abnormal growth of cells in the esophagus. Usually, cells divide, grow, and terminate by apoptosis or programmed and controlled cell death. In esophageal cancer, the esophageal cells become malignant or threatening to life. They continue to multiply, damaging the surrounding tissue. Starting in the deeper levels of the esophagus such as the adventitia, cancerous cells grow towards the mucosa. This causes a growth on the lining of the esophagus causing dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing. Since this tissue is prone to hemorrhaging, regurtitation of blood is possible along with an early but false diagnosis of an ulcer. Esophageal cancer is divided into two major types.
