Content Inside:
Even though surgery has removed your tumor, it is possible that
some cancer cells may remain elsewhere in your body. Recurrence is
the term used to describe the return of cancer following primary
(initial) treatment, either at the same site as the original tumor or
somewhere else in the body.
For breast cancer survivors there is a risk that breast cancer may come
back after diagnosis and initial treatment (surgery, chemotherapy,
and/or radiation). Depending on whether your lymph nodes are
positive or negative, this risk can be between 20% and 50% within
the first five years after diagnosis.
No studies have proven that thereâ s a specific time when a breast
cancer patient will be completely free of the risk for recurrence.
