Content Inside:
Relative survival after diagnosis of cancer of the brain is poor when compared with other cancers. During 1992-1997, relative survival one year after diagnosis was 42.2% for males and 41.1% for females. The five-year relative survival proportion after diagnosis of brain cancer was 23.8% for both males and females (Table 18.1). Ten-year relative survival was 21.4% for males and 21.9% for females in 19871991, the most recent period for which tenyear relative survival data are available (Figure 18.2; Tables 18.2 and 18.3). Relative survival after diagnosis remained fairly consistent between the periods 19821986 and 19921997, with no statistically significant trends for either males or females. Five-year relative survival was highest for males and females aged less than 40 years. Within this group, relative survival proportions were highest for males and females aged 1019 years74.2% and 70.9%, respectively. As age increased from 40 years, five-year relative survival declined rapidly, to 3.5% for males and 4.4% for females aged 7099 years (Figure 18.3; Table 18.1). For individual age groups, there were no statistically significant changes in five-year relative survival between 19821986 and 19921997 (Figure 18.3; Tables 18.5, 18.6). Table 18.1: Cancer of the brain: number of new cases and deaths, and five-year relative survival proportions, by age at diagnosis and sex, Australia, 19921997 New cases Deaths 5-year relative ...
