Although medical advances have dramatically improved cancer therapeutics, patients need to be attentive to their overall health. Cancer Treatments May Affect Bones Treatments for cancer and the disease process itself have been demonstrated to affect the bones of cancer patients in two ways. First, hormone therapy treatments, commonly used as therapeutics for breast and prostate cancer, have been shown to increase the risk of bone loss in cancer patients. Additionally, some kinds of chemotherapy might also increase loss. This bone loss could lead to the bone thinning condition osteoporosis. Second, cancer may spread to the bones, or metastasize, from its original site. Tumors in bone can replace healthy tissue and destabilize bones, making them weak and more susceptible to fracture. Cancer cells also stimulate bone destruction which in turn releases cytokines or growth factors that stimulate cancer cell growth. Also, in many types of bone cancer, abnormally high levels of osteoclasts lead old bone to break down faster than new bone can be formed. This malfunction leads to a number of problems, including bone pain and the weakening of bones which can lead to bone fractures. Symptoms While some patients may experience pain, both bone loss and bone metastasis can be symptomless.
