Why does bone health matter? Bones are the basis of a basic circle of health. The healthier your bones are, the more active you are able to be. The more active you are able to be, the healthier your bones are. What impact does cancer have on a patients bones? Most cancer patients dont think about how cancer can affect the health of their bones. However, cancer and its treatments can affect bones in two ways. Firstly, hormone therapies, which are commonly used to treat breast and prostate cancer, may increase the risk of bone loss, which may lead to the bone thinning condition osteoporosis, even in men. Secondly, sometimes cancer can metastasize, or spread, from its original site to the bones, resulting in weak and unstable bones. Tumors in bone can replace healthy tissue and destabilize bones, making them weak and more susceptible to fracture. Cancer cells also stimulate bone destruction which in turn releases cytokines or growth factors that stimulate cancer cell growth. Also, in many types of bone cancer, abnormally high levels of osteoclasts lead old bone to break down faster than new bone can be formed.
