What is Parkinsons disease Public Health and Genetics Information Series Parkinsons Disease What is Parkinsons disease? Parkinsons disease is a common, slowly progressive, neurodegenerative disease. It results from the degeneration of neurons in the substantia nigra , a region of the brain that controls movement. This degeneration results in a shortage of a neurotransmitter called dopamine , therefore, causing impaired movement. The disease is most frequently seen in people in their 70s and 80s with a slightly higher incidence in Caucasians, than in African-Americans and Asians.
