Osteoporosis is a common health problem. According to Core Concepts in Health, it is the loss of bone density, causing bones to become weak, porous, and more prone to fractures (Insel & Roth, 2006, p. 353). This usually affects women and men over the age of 50 and is caused by age, unhealthy diet, no exercise, small frame, family history, and there is an increased chance for women. It can be prevented by exercise, a nutritious diet, and a tobacco and alcohol free lifestyle (Glanze, Anderson, & Anderson, 1990). Osteoclast and osteoblast are the basic functioning cells in bone remodeling. Osteoclast creates tunnels and pits in the bone. Osteoblast fills in the craters and completes the remodeling process. Approximately every 7 to 10 years the skeletal bone is replaced (DiPiro et al., 2005, pg. 1646). As someone ages these basic cells may malfunction, which can cause osteoporosis. It is possible to experience stooped posture, decrease in height, bone fractures, hip and back pain and possible breathing problems with this disease. According to Core Concepts in Health, a drop in estrogen levels about 5-10 years after a women experiences menopause will result in an increase in bone loss. Women already have 10-25% less bone density than men, which enables women to have an increased risk of osteoporosis. Some women naturally have a greater risk of suffering from this disease if they are white or Asian; have a family history including osteoporosis, experienced early menopause, history of anorexia, unhealthy eating habits, and a thin, small frame (Insel & Roth, 2006, p. 353).
