Content Inside:
The incidence of arterial and venous thrombosis in young individuals is very low, being approximately 1 per 10 000 per year 1,2 and there is a general belief that thromboses are diseases of the old age. For this reason young people are less cognisant than old people of thrombosis and its consequences and deal with them less well. In the young thrombosis often resolves with no major functional deficit of the affected organs and patients recover well physically. In spite of this, they are often psychologically devastated. It is then plausible that young patients with thrombosis may have a special tendency to develop psychological changes that influence their behaviour, quality of life (QoL) and coping capacities 3 . According to the World Health Organisation, QoL is defined as an individuals perception of their position in life in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards and concerns 4 . It is a multidimensional concept, including physical (disease-related symptoms), functional (self-care, capacity to perform various family and work roles), psychological (cognitive and emotional functions) and social (familial and social contacts) dimensions. Coping is defined as how individuals change their behavioural efforts to manage specific external or internal demands (e.g. disease-related problems) that are appraised as taxing or exceeding their resources 5 . Numerous studies have demonstrated the impact of different chronic diseases on QoL and coping 6-11 . As to thrombosis, many studies evaluated QoL after arterial thrombosis, particularly stroke and myocardial infarction 12-15 , but relatively few data are available on QoL in venous thrombosis 16-23 , and those available are mainly focused on the post-phlebitic syndrome 17-22 or are designed to assess the impact on QoL of anticoagulant treatment 23 . All these studies included ...
