What is beta-thalassemia trait? Beta-thalassemia trait is different from beta-thalassemia disease--the trait is not a disease. Beta-thalassemia trait occurs when a person inherits one betathalassemia gene from one parent and a normal hemoglobin gene from the other parent. How common is beta-thalassemia trait? Beta-thalassemia occurs primarily among people whose ancestors came from the Mediterranean, Asia, Africa, and India. Approximately 1 in 50 African Americans has beta-thalassemia trait. Since it isnt a disease, why should a person with beta-thalassemia trait be concerned? Beta-thalassemia trait is inherited, so a parent with beta-thalassemia trait can pass the trait on to each of his/her children. If both parents have the trait, there is a risk of passing beta-thalassemia disease on to each child. Your doctor can talk to you about about testing for the trait, as well as other options. How does a person get beta-thalassemia trait or beta-thalassemia disease? At least one parent must have beta-thalassemia trait in order for a child to inherit beta-thalassemia trait. With each pregnancy in which only one parent has betathalassemia trait, there is a: 50% chance that the child will have normal hemoglobin 50% chance that the child will have beta-thalassemia trait With each pregnancy in which both parents have beta-thalassemia trait, there is a 25% chance that the child will have normal hemoglobin, a 50% chance that the child will have beta-thalassemia trait, and a 25% chance that the child will have beta-thalassemia disease: What treatments are needed for people with beta-thalassemia trait? No treatments are necessary because beta-thalassemia trait is not a disease.
