The feline leukemia vaccine has been shown to be effective over many millions of doses and is one of the reasons leukemia in cats is not as common as it was in the 1960s and 1970s. Edward Hoover Professor, Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/mip Technology Edward Hoover, veterinarian and University Distinguished Professor of Pathology, developed a vaccine that keeps millions of cats safe from deadly feline leukemia. The vaccine is now the largest selling feline leukemia vaccine in the world and the only vaccine to prevent feline leukemia. Technology Transfer The vaccine Hoover developed is licensed by CSURF to Fort Dodge Animal Health, a leading prescription and over the-counter animal health care products company. In addition, the vaccine, called Fel-O-Vax, also may help to prevent other feline diseases including feline rhinotracheitis, feline panleukopenia, feline calicivirus, and feline pneumonitis. Hoover, a pathologist who has been teaching and doing research in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences since 1981, also is working on feline immunodefi ciency virus, or FIV, which is the feline equivalent of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS in humans. And if that isnt enough to keep him busy, Hoover received an $8 million grant in fall 2002 from the National Institutes of Health to study chronic wasting disease in deer and elk.
