Content Inside:
Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is an aggressive cancer of the white blood cells. The cancerous white blood cells or blasts are abnormal immature white blood cells which occupy the bone marrow and replace the normal components involved in the formation of blood cells. Because of this, the normal white cells, red cells and platelets decrease. This leads to symptoms of anemia (weakness, shortness of breath on exertion, etc.), infections and bleeding. These symptoms usually bring the patient to the doctor and lead to the diagnosis of leukemia. Rapid increase of leukemic white cells in the blood may also lead to difficulty in breathing, bleeding or symptoms of stroke or heart disease. AML is more common in older adults. While this disease occurs in less than one per 100,000 in individuals less than 30 years of age, the frequency is greater than 11 per 100,000 in individuals more than 30 years of age. The diagnosis of AML is usually suspected from the symptoms, physical examination of the patient (the doctor may find pallor, bleeding or evidence of infection or enlargement of liver or spleen, etc.) and/or a basic blood count. A sample of blood is examined under a microscope to see what the cells look like and to determine the number of mature cells and leukemic cells or blasts. Once AML is suspected specialized tests are done to confirm the diagnosis. A bone marrow aspiration and biopsy are usually needed to confirm the diagnosis and to obtain details ...
