Most people diagnosed with AIDS before the age of 30 were infected with HIV in their teens or early twenties. This illustrates the importance of advocating prevention to young people so that they have the information and resources they need to protect themselves and each other from HIV when they make decisions about experimentation with drugs and sex. United States CDC estimates that 50% of persons with HIV infection worldwide acquire the infection by age 25 and that 25% of infections in the United States are acquired before age 22. AIDS -related illnesses are the ninth leading cause of death among people between the ages of 15-24. (1998 data) By the end of 2001, 28,665 cases of AIDS had been reported in people between the ages of 20-24. Almost 61% of high school 12 th graders have had sexual intercourse. Almost 49% of sexually active 12 th graders report using a latex condom the last time they had sex. Nearly half of the HIV infections reported among young men (age 13-24) occur in men who have sex with men. Black and Latina women over the age of 13 comprise 80% of reported AIDS cases among women in 2001. HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death among black men between 25 and 44 years of age and second leading cause of death among black women between 25 and 44 years of age. (2000 data) Young people who live on the street often exchange sex for shelter, security or food, and are thus at an increased risk for HIV infection. Some young people who are addicted to drugs suffer from an increased risk of becoming infected with HIV by exchanging sex for drugs or money. Florida AIDS -related illnesses are the ninth leading cause of death among people between the ages of 15-19 and the fifth leading cause of death between the ages of 20-24. In 2003, 13% of reported new HIV cases occurred in people between 13-24 years of age. By the end of 2003, 3,494 cases of AIDS had been reported in people between the ages of 20-24.
