Anyone can develop high blood pressure, also called hypertension. Studies show that African Americans are at higher risk for high blood pressure than any other group. The good news is that high blood pressure can be controlled better yet, it can be prevented. What is high blood pressure? Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against your blood vessels. Your blood pressure is greatest when your heart is pumping blood. This is the systolic blood pressure. When your heart rests between beats, your blood pressure falls. This is the diastolic blood pressure. Blood pressure is always given in two numbers, the systolic (upper number) and the diastolic (lower number), for example 120/80mm/Hg or millimeters of mercury. (Table 1) Why is it important? When your blood pressure is high that means your heart has to work harder to pump blood through your body. Most people feel healthy and dont know they have high blood pressure. If it is not treated it can cause serious health problems, such as: stroke heart attack eye problems kidney problems death To prevent high blood pressure or to lower your blood pressure Eat foods lower in fat. Eat smaller portions of food. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Eat more foods that are good sources of calcium Eat foods low in salt and sodium. Be physically active. Lose weight if you are overweight. Cut back on alcoholic beverages. If you already have high blood pressure Take your medicine the way your doctors tells you. Tell your doctor if the medicine makes you feel strange. Dont stop taking your medicine unless your doctor tells you to stop. Dont skip doses of your medicine. Have your blood pressure checked often.
