Hemochromatosis Fact Sheet In medical image analysis, speed and accuracy matter. What is Hemochromatosis? Hereditary Hemochromatosis is an inherited condition that causes abnormally high iron absorption from a persons diet. The condition is caused by an abnormal gene or genes that control iron absorption. Hereditary Hemochromatosis is common in countries where the population is largely of Northern European origin. In these countries, around 1 in 227 people are carriers of an abnormal Hemochromatosis gene. Not every individual who carries the abnormal gene exhibits symptoms of the disease, and some people may test negative for the abnormal gene but still suffer from Hemochromatosis. However, Hereditary Hemochromatosis is the most common cause of primary iron overload. What are the symptoms of Hemochromatosis? The signs and symptoms of Hemochromatosis are vague and often do not appear until middle age (30-60 years). Some patients do not have any symptoms or signs at all. The most common symptoms associated with Hemochromatosis are: Lethargy and weakness. Arthralgia (pain in the joints). Loss of libido. Abdominal discomfort. Is Iron Overload caused by Hereditary Hemochromatosis serious? Yes. If left untreated and undetected, iron toxicity is a major cause of severe illness and premature death. Iron overload can result in the following: Liver disease fibrosis, cirrhosis and potentially cancer. Heart complications congestive heart failure and arrhythmia. Pancreas complications diabetes mellitus and arthritis of the joints. Pituitary gland disorders tiredness, loss of libido and potential impotence.
