DONT GET MOLDY! How does mold affect city buildings, employees, and the public? Mold problems have been identified in many public buildings and homes through the US. Minnesota cities are not strangers to this problem as they have experienced mold growth inside their buildings in recent years. One city had to move its staff from city hall so mold could be removed from city offices and other sections of the building. The problem started with a roof leak and progressed to the point that city hall had to be abandoned. Some insurance companies have excluded mold-related problems from their coverage. The following memo discusses the problem, what can be done to fix it and techniques cities can use to deal with mold-related indoor air problems. What is mold anyway? Mold is a type of multi-celled fungi found both inside and outside buildings. Early history indicates problems with mold date back to Roman times when unknown illness was caused by eating food covered with fungi. More recently, a fungus caused the Irish Potato Famine of the 19th Century. Among thousands of species of fungi, common varieties include yeast, mushrooms, some types of rust, and puffballs. Mold spores, like other fungi become airborne and can be carried by the wind to a place where they take root. Molds have a useful purpose in breaking down wood, leaves, and other organic matter. Some beneficial types of mold are used in the manufacture of food and antibiotics. Among these antibiotics are penicillin and cyclosporine. Other types of mold are considered highly toxic and are known as mycotoxins and endotoxins. Grain dust is a potential source of mycotoxic mold and can cause a condition known as farmers lung.
