Allergic Rhinitis/Hay Fever Allergic Rhinitis/Hay Fever Doctors call it allergic rhinitis. Most people call it hay fever or sinus. By whatever name, its responsible for sneezing, itching, a clear runny nose, postnasal drip, dark circles under the eyes, itchy watery eyes, itchy nose, cough, headache and fatigue. Allergic rhinitis is an allergic reaction to inhalants that are commonly found in our environment such as pollen, dust mites, animal dander and mold. It can be seasonal, caused by pollen from trees, grasses(springtime) and weeds(fall), or it can be year-round, most often caused by an allergy to animal dander and the dust mite, a microscopic creature that thrives on humidity and flakes from human skin. Hay fever is serious enough to interfere with daily life for the more than 20 million Americans who are susceptible to it. The costs are high 2 million days of restricted activity each year, 6 million days of bed rest, 3.5 million lost work days, 2 million physician visits. Although hay fever can develop at any age, it often begins before age 20. Complications of Allergic Rhinitis Complications of Allergic Rhinitis can include the following: Recurrent or chronic sinus infections Recurrent ear infections or chronic fluid in the ear, especially in children Nasal polyps Worsening of asthma People with allergic rhinitis are 3-6 times more likely to develop asthma than those without allergy Decreased sense of smell and taste How is Allergic Rhinitis diagnosed? The diagnosis of allergic rhinitis is initially considered after taking a thorough history and performing a physical examination. If your doctor deems necessary, allergy skin testing is performed, and will demonstrate which allergens you are allergic to. How is Allergic Rhinitis Treated?
