ALLERGY DRUGS The rise in allergies suggests complex causes. But sometimes the solutions are simple: For instance, tell patients to wash their hair at night to quell ocular symptoms. Just when it seemed as though there was nothing more to be said regarding allergy that has not already been said dozens of times, along comes a bit of news. Past president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the Association of Certified Allergists, Bob Lanier, M.D., makes the following observations: 1 While no one is certain as to why there has been such a surge in allergy incidence, the fact remains that allergy, including ocular allergy, is indeed on the rise. The incidence of allergy has been increasing for the past thirty to forty years. Allergy is an ancient defense system that tens of thousands of years ago was a protection mechanism against parasites. One theory about the increased incidence of allergy suggests that as the back- ground presence of parasites in industrialized countries declines, the immune system develops such that it mistakenly identifies trees, grass, weeds, and food as enemies. This hypothesis gains credence when considering that industrialized countries those that clean up the environment, routinely vaccinate, use more antibiotics seem to be more affected by allergy than non-industrialized countries. Processing was thought to be to blame for the increase in peanut reactions and would explain the sudden surge in reactions to a food that has been consumed for thou- sands of years. Another theory holds that the rise in food sensitivity correlates with the rise in use of proton-pump inhibitors (e.g., Prilosec). By decreasing the amount of acid in the gastrointestinal tract and interfering with digestion of certain foods, anti-reflux medications may actually allow certain food sensitivities It would appear that the widespread, nearly epidemic, use of proton-pump inhibitors has opened ...
