Latex allergy: Alaboratory view LATEX ALLERGIC responses have been cited in the medical literature since as early as 1927; 1 however, within the past 15 years, this health concern has captured an increasing number of powerful headlines. This heightened attention to latex allergies may have its roots in the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC, Atlanta, GA) recommendation for universal precautions in 1987, in response to the growing AIDS concerns. In compliance with this recommendation, health-care professionals began to use gloves and other personal protective devices more frequently and for longer periods of time, often inappropriately. Following the CDCs recommendation, glove usage increased eightfold in one year. 2 Natural rubber latex Because of its benefitscomfort, cost effectiveness, and durability natural rubber latex (NRL) has been the preferred material from which most medical gloves are manufactured. However, as more and more health-care professionals began wearing NRL g l o v e s , their risk of sensitization to NRL increased. In response to this growing health concern, several federal organizations, including the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), have released information that addresses the issue of sensitization to NRL. These agencies encourage health-care facilities to develop methods and procedures by which facilities choose and use NRL products, such as medical gloves. NIOSH, for instance, states in its latex allergy prevention guide to Use non-latex gloves for activities that are not likely to involve contact with infectious materials (food preparation, routine housekeeping, general maintenance, etc.) Appropriate barrier protection such as that which NRL gloves offer is necessary when handling infectious materials. If you choose latex gloves, use gloves that are powder-free with reduced protein content ...
